Emerson extends PlantWeb capability

March 2010 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Foundation Fieldbus interfaces for remote oil, gas and water applications.

Emerson Process Management has expanded the benefits of digital field technology and asset management in remote scada applications with the introduction of Foundation Fieldbus interfaces for ControlWave RTUs and ROC800-Series remote operations controllers. The Foundation Fieldbus interface combines the benefits of Foundation Fieldbus with proven RTUs to reduce costs and increase efficiency in a wide range of oil and gas and water and wastewater applications.

The interface extends the power of PlantWeb digital architecture beyond traditional plant walls where environmental demands on power consumption, temperature range, physical size, and mounting footprint are important system design considerations. Operational performance is improved through the increased accuracy of digitally retrieved process data and diagnostic information provided to decision makers. Integrating the RTUs and remote operations controllers into PlantWeb architecture provides enterprise-wide optimisation, instrument diagnostics, predictive maintenance scheduling, calibration, and reconfiguration.

Now, ControlWave and ROC800-Series controllers can access multiple variables over a single pair of wires in a point-to-point or multidrop configuration. The interface eliminates the need for technicians to cover hundreds of miles configuring and diagnosing instrument problems in wide-area scada networks. Installation and wiring costs are also reduced as centralising with fieldbus eliminates the need for extra hardware.

A Field Interface Configurator makes setup and commissioning quick and easy. This software tool schedules, commissions, and creates data relationships between fieldbus devices and variables within the ControlWave or ROC800-Series controller. The Configurator is the only software tool needed to commission and deploy the fieldbus interface.

Case History 190: Measurement problem ruins level control.
Michael Brown Control Engineering Editor's Choice Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
The widely held belief in many plants that tuning will solve all base layer control problems is completely fallacious. Bad tuning is generally not the main reason for loops to perform badly. It is important when performing optimisation that all elements in a loop are considered, in addition to the control strategy, before even thinking of tuning.
