Universal surge arresters
December 2009
Electrical Power & Protection
DEHN has introduced the universal BLITZductor XTU combined lightning current surge arresters for instrumentation and automation systems. The first arrester designed to adapt itself to the nominal voltage of the installation. Nominal rated voltage is not specified, however, the arrester can be used for all voltages in the range from 0 to 180 VDC.
Innovative technology allows it to automatically detect the signal voltage of the information signal and adapt itself. Moreover, it continuously adapts its voltage protection level to the currently applied signal voltage and is thus ideally suited for all AC applications.
In case of interference, BLITZductor XTU arresters always have an adapted, minimal residual for every signal voltage to provide maximum protection for devices and systems connected to them. The arresters considerably reduce planning efforts and storage requirements, since even if it is not known at the planning stage of an installation which voltages are to be used for signal transmission the range can be confidently specified. The arresters are also ideally suited for retrofitting existing systems with surge protective devices or replacing existing arresters.
The pluggable arresters consist of a BXTU protection module and a DIN rail mountable BXT base part. The base part features terminals for two twin wires and earth connection. An uninterrupted switch contact allows the protection modules to be removed and inserted without interrupting system operation.
A patented LifeCheck monitoring function allows for easy testing of the arresters during operation provided that the protection module is plugged in. This monitoring function can also detect arresters damaged by overload thus ensuring safe operation.
