Industrial earth leakage protection relays

December 2009 Electrical Power & Protection

With an established track record of over 10 years, the NewElec GA range of industrial earth leakage relays provides an alternative reliable source for all earth leakage protection needs. As the relays suppress harmonics, they are especially suited for use with variable speed drives. The range extends from a sensitivity of 30 to 1 000 mA. However, each individual relay is user configurable as either an instantaneous trip relay (100 ms) or as an IDMT trip curve. Earth leakage core balance CTs are likewise available in a diverse range from a 43 to 190 mm ID. Rectangular cores for use with bus bars are also available and may be used with either trip curve characteristic.

The GA relays are equipped with a main changeover trip contact that is factory configurable as a latching or non-latching relay. Furthermore, this main trip contact may be configured as either fail-safe or non fail-safe. In the fail-safe mode the removal of the power supply to the relay for longer than 1 s will energise the main trip relay.

The device has an additional contactor-latching relay that forces a manual reset when the main contactor holding coil is wired in series with it. This can be a useful feature if it is desired to force a manual reset that restarts the motor. As well as the localised reset on the front control panel the relay has a remote reset facility. All changeover contacts are rated 6 A at 220 VAC.
