On-line monitoring of ammonia in wastewater
April 2001
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
There are a number of environmental reasons why ammonia must be monitored in wastewater treatment and effluent discharges - to ensure the nutrient levels are sufficient to allow bacteria to break down waste products; to minimise concentrations of ammonia in the final outfall so that the effluent is safe for wildlife; to document discharge levels to meet regulatory authorities; and to avoid penalties for discharging concentrations of ammonia which exceed permitted levels.
Tytronics provide a series of colorimetric analysers designed to provide continuous on-line analysis of process streams, with self-checking for easy diagnostics. The FPA804 series uses a batch sampling technique that allows the use of large-bore tubing for sample and reagent lines, so small amounts of solids do not affect instrument performance.
Available from AFH Devers, the FPA 804 is fully microprocessor controlled and menu driven with malfunction diagnostic features. The optics are designed with a dual wavelength configuration. The measurement wavelength is 650 nm and the reference wavelength allows for correction of sample turbidity and coating on the dipping colorimetric probe. The instrument has an auto blank feature, which compensates for sample background colour. Because of these features, weekly instrument calibration is sufficient. Calibration is automatically performed to ensure instrument accuracy. Direct display of the results can be obtained from the instrument, and other signal outputs are isolated 4 to 20 mA, 0,5 V d.c. and RS232.
