Exhaust gas testing with the new testo probe.

Thousands of internal combustion engines exist throughout the world, ranging in size from small emergency generators to large 16 cylinder diesels powering ocean vessels. Stationary engines are used for generating electricity, compressing natural gas, pumping fluids, oil and gas production, combined heating and power stations and a myriad of other uses.

The exhaust gases contain pollutants such as hydrocarbons, soot and particulates; each engine type has its own particular emission signature. However, engine manufacturers and the supporting industries have developed innovative methods of controlling and substantially reducing such emissions, making exhaust gas measurement an essential component of engine control.

The objectives of exhaust gas analysis include the following:

* Measurement during the development process.

* Measurements as part of long-term tests.

* Measurements as part of certification procedures.

* Measurements for state and federal compliance.

Measurement upstream of the catalyst/soot filter is required in order to monitor engine efficiency and troubleshoot engine condition.

Measurement downstream of the catalyst/soot filter is required to monitor catalyst efficiency and to ensure compliance with local regulations.

Advantages of the testo 350-S/-XL flue gas analysers include:

* High range CO with rinse for out-of-control test conditions.

* Direct measurement of NO + NO2 for accurate NOx measurements.

* CxHy measurements.

* Suitable for applications with intense heat.

* All parameters in one instrument.

* On-site calibration for high accuracy is possible.

* Quick set-up and measurement.

* Software for easy report generation.

With the development of the new probe for diesel and gas engines, the testo 350/335 analysers offer a high degree of versatility in portable flue gas analysis equipment.
