Recently introduced by South African company PJ Tech, the traceable cap lamp Smartlight-05-M1 greatly improves the chances of successful rescue of trapped personnel. According to PJ Tech’s technical manager Peter Nowakowski, the system comprises the latest technology LED miner’s cap lamp equipped with GLON position transmitter that is mounted within the battery pack. In the case of an emergency, such as personnel caught behind a rock fall, the distance and bearing of the miner can be determined using the portable Position Receiver MinSeach-08. The receiver is able to locate trapped miners to within a 30 m radius through rock, which minimises rescue time and results in higher success rates.
The new system operates using a low frequency position transmitter, GLON, which is mounted within the battery pack of the lamp. The system is designed in such a way that the positioning device operates at all times; after the battery charge designed for providing light has been exhausted the light is cut off, but the signalling device will continue to operate for another seven days.
Additional significant features include:
* Three LEDs (two in head lamp and one in battery casing thus providing light even in case of a cable damage).
* Light weight – 1,3 kg (with battery, head lamp and cable).
* Optional methane detector with indicator.
* Optional RFID tag.
According to Nowakowski, such lamps are successfully used in Europe where in some cases usage of searchable cap lamps is compulsory. PJ Tech has obtained the exclusive technology and distribution rights from Elektrometal SA for the Sub-Saharan region.
