Layer 3 Ethernet switch

May 2008 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

The EDS-828 series of switches from Moxa feature 4 Gigabit-speed wire connections, Layer 3 IP routing, redundant ring technology, and a modular design. The industrial-class switch is suitable for use as an optimised backbone solution in high-traffic data transmission applications that require the interconnection of different subnets. The EDS-828 not only offers Layer 3 switching functionality, but also features advanced Layer 2 Ethernet switching capability and security features.

The switches use optimised hardware to pass or forward data thus accelerating the performance of intelligent IP networks. The built-in routing table determines the best transmission path and segments the network to avoid the influence of broadcast storms. On the EDS-828, each port connects to a single LAN to take charge of the routing between different subnets. The switch can be deployed anywhere on a system network or backbone, and can easily connect to different LANs using its RIP (Routing Information Protocol) dynamic routing function for large systems, or static routing for small subnets. The OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) switching technology also helps to find the best path in Layer 3. Unlike legacy routers, the EDS-828 is designed and priced to help customers build a cost-effective, high efficiency, and intelligent platform for industrial automation.

Product features include:

* Support for static and dynamic routing functions.

* Up to 4 Gigabit and 24 Fast Ethernet ports with copper or fibre-optic connectors.

* Gigabit Turbo Ring and RSTP STP for Ethernet redundancy.

* IEEE 802.1X, HTTPS, and SSH enhance network security.

* QoS, IGMP snooping/GMRP, VLAN, LACP, SNMPv1/v2c/v3, and RMON supported.

* Automatic system configuration backup adaptor supported.

The switches are designed to give superior network performance, a flexible modular design, and high availability for backbone solutions.
