Ultrafilter for environmental testing laboratories

November 2007 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

Several final filtration cartridges for use with its Milli-Q Advantage A10 ultrapure water system have been introduced by Millipore Corporation. Each of the disposable point-of-use (POU) final filters is designed to fit the Milli-Q Advantage system's Q-POD unit. The POU filters ensure the removal of contaminants critical for specific applications just before the ultrapure water leaves the system.

Making its début at Pittcon 2007, the EDS-Pak ultrafilter is the latest addition to Millipore's POU final filter range. This new unit meets the needs of researchers in environmental testing laboratories who require ultrapure water free of endocrine disrupters: the small organic molecules that impact hormonal functioning in both humans and animals. Exposure to these chemicals, which are increasingly present in the environment, may cause sterility or decreased fertility, birth defects and metabolism disorders.

Domestic and international research programmes are now focusing on the identification and evaluation of these chemicals, and are establishing common priorities to develop and validate tests and strategies. In order to obtain the detection and quantification levels needed to test for the presence of endocrine disrupters, the ultrapure water used in liquid chromatography sample and mobile phase preparation must contain a minimum of organics. While conventional water purification techniques remove the bulk of organic compounds from ultrapure water, some trace organics still may remain.

The new EDS-Pak POU activated charcoal filter has been designed to adsorb small organic molecules and dispense up to 300 total litres of ultrapure water free of endocrine disrupters. The cartridge connects to the Milli-Q Advantage system's Q-POD unit as a final purification step, either alone or in combination with a Millipak 0,22 μm filter. It has been validated in Millipore laboratories to warrant the production of ultrapure water free of bisphenol A (<5 ppt), diethyl phthalate (<0,5 ppb) and di-n-butyl phthalate (<0,5 ppb). Trace concentrations of endocrine disrupters can thus be obtained, allowing organic levels in environmental analyses to be reliably measured. Each EDS-Pak filter is delivered with a 'Certificate of Quality' from an independent laboratory, as well as a multilingual user manual.

The Millipore line of POU filters includes two other final filters: the BioPak ultrafiltration cartridge, designed to produce pyrogen- and nuclease-free ultrapure water for use in cell culture, biochemistry or molecular biology applications; and the Millipak filter with Millipore Express 0,22 μm membrane filter for the production of particulate- and bacteria-free ultrapure water in analytical applications such as spectrophotometry, spectroscopy and chromatography. All of the filters can be used as a final purification step with the Milli-Q Advantage ultrapure water system, as well as with the company's Direct-Q or Synergy water purification systems.
