Traditional proximity sensors often make use of plastic housings or metal foil construction and while quite practical for many less demanding roles in industry, will often show a shorter working lifetime in harsh circumstances than many manufacturers would prefer.
This is where Pepperl+Fuchs's proximity sensors stand out. Machined from solid stainless steel stock, with no welds or thin foil areas, these sensors are particularly robust. While the continuous presence of liquid, vapour or steam would often rule out the use of conventional proximity sensors, Pepperl+Fuchs' one-piece stainless steel body creates an impenetrable barrier between the sensor's internal electronics and the outside environment. Even high-pressure washdowns (a necessity in the food and beverage industry) have no effect on this sensor.
The stainless steel material makes the sensor highly resistant to corrosive environments, which means that caustic cleaning agents used in the food and beverage industry may be used to full effect.
The proximity sensors come in two series, they are FE and NFE, which are designed to detect ferrous and nonferrous metals respectively. Nonferrous metals that can be detected by the NFE series of sensors include aluminium, brass and copper. The company claims substantial improvements in sensitivity to nonferrous metals, compared to current industry standards.
The proximity sensors are available in 40 different models, enclosed in industry standard 12, 18 and 30 mm diameter housings. The DC models include both NPN and PNP three-wire designs. Quick-disconnect versions feature 360° visibility LED indication with micro and mini-style quick disconnects and industrial grade PUR cable.
