Energy manager performs steam calculations

September 2007 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

The Endress+Hauser RMS621 energy manager was developed for industrial water and steam energy calculation. The unit performs steam mass measurement, steam heat calculations and water heat differential.

Using plug-in expansion cards, the number of inputs and outputs can be selected to suit the application. Up to three expansion cards can be incorporated in each base unit. This, coupled with the unit's high calculation speed, makes it possible to simultaneously operate three independent water/steam applications on one unit.

Between four and 10 analog, digital and temperature inputs are available. These are independently presettable and can be defined to more than one application in the unit. The measured values, as well as those calculated, can be retransmitted using two to 14 analog or digital outputs or by means of the built-in RS232 interface. A maximum of seven relays are available for alarm set-point condition monitoring.

Calculation of the energy values from the flow, pressure and temperature inputs is done using the international IAPWS-IF97 standard as a base for the most used calculation formulae for industrial heat calculation.

This DIN top hat rail mounted unit is operated using a rear illuminated dot matrix display and soft keys or by using the built-in serial interface and the freeware operating software, ReadWin 2000, with which other E+H units can also be set up. An optional remote panel-mounted display is also available. This display has the same functionality as the integrated display and soft keys on the unit. The easy set-up is additionally supported by a quick set-up feature, as well as on-line help text. To draw operator attention to alarm set-point conditions, sensor faults or process values, the rear illumination changes colour from blue to red.
