Older, pre-'70s classic cameras, do not have built in light meters, or they have older selenium cells that died on a cold winter's day back in 1983. Because of this, a good handheld light meter is extremely important (well, essential) unless you are skilled enough to read the light and approximate the required exposure.
A light meter will allow the photographer to determine which shutter speed and f-number to select for an optimum exposure, given certain lighting conditions and film speed.
In the commercial and industrial sphere light meters are necessary to ensure compliance with minimum lighting levels in workplaces. They are used in the general field of lighting, where they can help to reduce the amount of waste light used in the home, light pollution outdoors, and plant growing to ensure proper light levels. Other uses for light meters are in the fields of cinematography and scenic design, in order to determine the optimum light level for a scene.
