Siemens acquires Italian company Orsi

February 2001 News

Through its acquisition of the Orsi company of Genoa, Italy, the Siemens Automation & Drives Group (A&D) is strengthening its position in process and manufacturing automation. Siemens and the Orsi-shareholders agreed upon the takeover of all shares, pending approval of the antitrust authorities. In the last fiscal year, Orsi generated earnings of around Euro 30 million and is one of the leading suppliers of software products for industrial MES (manufacturing execution systems) solutions. Under the terms of the acquisition the Orsi Group, with more than 360 employees, will trade as a subsidiary of the Siemens Italy Regional Company and as worldwide MES competence centre of A&D. The company will be managed by Giorgio Cuttica (CEO), former Orsi CEO.

Orsi and Siemens are leaders in the world market for industrial MES (manufacturing execution system) software. Siemens A&D intends to make the company in Genoa the Competence Centre for its worldwide activities in this field. The company will bundle the complementary products of Siemens and Orsi and thus offer the most comprehensive range of e-manufacturing solutions on the world market. The market for such applications is growing at an annual rate of more than 20%. Together the two companies employ more than 500 specialists. Only recently, Orsi strengthened its activities in the US market through the purchase of Hilco, St Louis/Missouri.

About Siemens A&D

The Siemens Automation and Drives Group (A&D), Nuremberg/Erlangen, Germany, is a world-leading manufacturer in this field. Products supplied by A&D include standard products for the manufacturing and process industries and for the electrical installation industry as well as system solutions, for example for machine tools, and solutions for whole industries such as the automation of entire automobile factories or chemical plants. Supplementing this range of products and services, A&D also offers software tools for linking production and management (vertical IT integration). A&D employs 54 000 people worldwide and in fiscal year 2000 (to September 30) earned a pre-tax profit of Euro 872 million on sales of Euro 7,9 billion and orders of Euro 8,2 billion.
