Ethernet switch is temperature tolerant

September 2007 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Advantech's ADAM-6520I is an industrial Ethernet switch that combines a wide operating temperature with five 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports to provide reliable, fast, and cost-effective service for any industrial Ethernet network.

With an operating temperature range of -40 to 85°C the switch can tolerate a wider temperature range than many other Ethernet switches. This makes it ideal for use in harsh work environments that have extreme temperatures, such as ice manufacturing facilities or oil refineries.

The module is also designed with removable screw terminals to ensure that it is always solidly mounted, and that power lines will not be accidentally removed. Moreover, the ADAM-6520I supports up to 3000 V d.c. surge protection and 4000 Ethernet ESD protection. The compact design of the ADAM family saves space, and it offers flexible mounting options including DIN-rail, wall and stack.

Six LED indicators on the switch simplify troubleshooting. For immediate on-site diagnosis each port has a pair of LEDs that indicate link status and port activities, and which inform the user of any collisions, link status, power failure and data receipts.

The switch controller can automatically sense transmission speed (10/100 Mbps), and all Ethernet ports have memory buffers that support the 'store-and-forward' mechanism. The RJ-45 interface is also auto-detected, so that MDI or MDIX can be auto-selected, and a crossover cable is not necessary.

Case History 190: Measurement problem ruins level control.
Michael Brown Control Engineering Editor's Choice Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
The widely held belief in many plants that tuning will solve all base layer control problems is completely fallacious. Bad tuning is generally not the main reason for loops to perform badly. It is important when performing optimisation that all elements in a loop are considered, in addition to the control strategy, before even thinking of tuning.
