Full integration of Interbus in Profinet

June 2007 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Based on the Enhanced Real-Time Ethernet Controller (Ertec) 400 that was developed for Profinet-IRT, there are now two powerful Interbus proxies available from Phoenix Contact. They differ only in the construction of the Interbus master: The FL NP PND-4TX IB uses copper wiring for the Interbus system. The FL NP PND-4TX IB-LK employs fibre-optic cabling.

Interbus offers the full functional range of Generation 4. A proxy can address up to 8192 I/O signals in both input and output directions, for a maximum of up to 512 I/O modules. All Interbus diagnostic functions, right down to the individual circuit diagnostics, are mapped to Profinet mechanisms. 500-kilobaud and 2-megabaud systems can be connected. Profinet supports update rates right down to 1 ms. This allows the proxy to be employed when migrating applications to Profinet, making it possible to integrate anything from small Interbus segments to complete networks.

Both proxies combine the Interbus master with a four-port control cabinet switch on the basis of Ertec 400, a powerful Profinet IO-RT/IRT chip set. The integrated switch obviates the need for additional switching devices at the installation location. Several proxies can, for example, be switched together in a row. The proxy supports all protocols and functions required for Profinet. In particular, this includes the Lower LinkLayer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) for reading out topology information from the network. Both proxies therefore offer consistent, vertical integration of Interbus into any given Profinet-capable control system.
