New remote I/O modules

April 2007 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Acromag, represented by Alltron Instruments, introduces BusWorks 900EN Series I/O modules with Ethernet/IP protocol. Each module has a built-in network port, eliminating the space and expense of a buscoupler unit, and no need for software, due to an integral web page, allowing setup with a standard Internet browser.

Three I/O module types are available. The discrete I/O modules are ideal for ON/OFF monitoring and control of industrial devices. Analog input modules convert DC voltage, current or temperature signals from sensors to the network. Analog output modules provide DC current or voltage output.

The EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP/IP I/O DIN Rail modules interface up to 12 analog or discrete I/O signals directly to an EtherNet/IP network. Since each unit has its own Ethernet port, it can operate independently of a bus-coupler or controller that typically handles network communication for modular block I/O systems. Without those expensive communication devices, Acromag's I/O modules are able to deliver a cost and space-efficient solution. A complete 12-channel I/O solution would need only one inch of DIN rail space. The modules provide an isolated EtherNet/IP 10/100 Mbps network interface. To ensure interoperability, the units have passed the internationally recognised EtherNet/IP conformance tests established by the ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendors Association).

All Ethernet units have three-way 1,5 kV a.c. isolation separating the I/O, network and power circuits to prevent damage from surges and ground loops. Built-in watchdog timers continuously monitor network communications while self-diagnostic routines simplify maintenance and troubleshooting. A failsafe mode can also be set to ensure outputs are sent to a safe state if a failure occurs. LEDs indicate power, network activity, and individual channel status. Discrete I/O is offered on three models with a choice of 12 input channels, 12 output channels, or 12 individually selectable bi-directional input/output channels. Analog output models provide 0/4 to 20 mA d.c. current output or voltage output signals.

Acromag's new five-port Ethernet switch is specially designed for use in industrial applications. Internal intelligence enables 'connect and go' operation for fast and easy network installation with auto-negotiation of 10/100 Mbps data rate, full/half-duplex flow control, and crossover signal compatibility. For advanced users, this switch offers numerous control functions that are easily configured through DIP-switch settings or programmed using the user's computer.

Modbus-RTU remote I/O modules offer analog input modules with four inputs, as well as digital/relay outputs. Alarm trip functions with host communication, enabling low cost standalone alarms or failsafe shutdowns in the event that network communication is lost.

Alltron Instruments have also introduced the Acromag range of Profibus DP universal I/O modules, also in a 1-inch wide module. Each module provides a direct network interface for I/O signals. Unlike 'block I/O' devices that combine large, expensive processor blocks with snap-on I/O terminal blocks, the Profibus modules handle the network interface and I/O processing in one. They feature on-board address switches and automatic baud rate detection to simplify installation.

Feedforward control is a powerful technique that can dramatically improve control variance in cases where load changes cause big deviations from setpoint and the actual process dynamics are too slow to allow the feedback controller to operate fast enough to catch these disturbances.
