JohnsonDiversey standardises on JUMO conductivity and pH systems

February 2007 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

For projects involving caustic and acid CIP (cleaning in process) control systems, mainly in the beverage, brewing, dairy and pharmaceutical sectors, JohnsonDiversey South Africa standardises on the German manufactured JUMO CTi series of conductivity sensors. To date some 140 have been supplied by ASSTech Instrumentation for installation in southern Africa.

Anastas Schnippenkotter, MD of ASSTech, says that some of the first JUMO CTi transmitters installed six years ago are still operational.

"The CTi Series offers a most favourable cost to performance ratio. In most of the installed systems, the sensors interface directly with on-site scada or PLC systems. With standalone applications, dosing control is carried out by JUMO iTron controllers that are built by ASSTech into customised field housings."

The bulk of the contracts have been over the past three years. More recently, JohnsonDiversey South Africa has standardised on the higher level, fully programmable CTi 750 inductive conductivity transmitter with a fast response temperature probe ensuring exact phase separation in CIP technology.

As the sensors are self-cleaning, build-up on the electrodes cannot affect measurement and accuracies are consistent at less than 1%.

"There is no need for regular calibration and the long life and high reliability of this type of conductive measuring probe saves in maintenance and spare parts as opposed to electrode type probes that require regular replacement", says Schnippenkotter.

JUMO pH measurement systems and dosing controllers are also used by JohnsonDiversey for installations in soft drink bottle washing plants throughout Africa and the Middle East with 180 units supplied over the past two years.

ASSTech ascribes the successful partnership with JohnsonDiversey to a policy of actively working with clients in applying technology to achieve the best efficiencies from the products.
