Pocket-sized hazardous gas monitor/alarm
January 2001
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
The Canary II personal gas monitor from Scott/Bacharach (formerly EIT) is a highly specific single gas monitor designed for continuous immediate detection of toxic or combustible gases or oxygen. Weighing in at approximately 30 g, the Canary II is small enough to fit in a shirt or overall pocket and, as it is certified intrinsically safe, may be carried in volatile areas.
It is equipped with a built-in 85 JBA siren, with selectable tones and a confidence 'blip' - which confirms safe working conditions. A time-weighted-average alarm facility for 15 min or 8 h exposure ensures that personnel are prevented from enduring exposure to gases over the prescribed safety limits. Calibration and zero controls are fitted on the front panel of the Canary II and, as an additional safety factor, a double action off button prevents accidental deactivation of the unit. Data is recorded by the monitor for subsequent collection via a Windows-compatible PC interface with custom software for simple configuration and data retrieval.
Accessories available for the Canary II include a shoulder strap, waist belt, leather carry case, aspirator and calibration adapter, charger and portable software. The Canary II forms part of a range of portable and fixed gas detection and fire detection systems from Scott/Bacharach who are represented locally by MeasureTech, a Tyco International company.

Cooling tower bleed control
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
Cooling towers rely on evaporation to remove heat, but this process also concentrates dissolved solids in the system. Left unmanaged, this buildup can lead to scaling, corrosion and fouling, reducing efficiency and increasing maintenance costs.
