Robust position sensors

June 2006 Sensors & Transducers

In harsh shock and vibration applications, the 'mechanical noise' frequently causes measurement problems in sensing systems, and without good sensor data, it is impossible to control motion accuracy.

This is why MTS has developed its Temposonics sensor with increased resistance to shock and vibration for heavy duty machinery. These sensors offer best-in-class performance with vibration up to 30gav and single shock up to 100g - without affecting the accuracy of the measurement signal. This high level of resistance to external influences is due to a sophisticated waveguide system, which is the heart of magnetostrictive measurement technology. In conjunction with the advantages of non-contact measurement physics, the new shock and vibration resistant Temposonics sensor offers performance characteristics that are believed unrivalled by other manufacturers.

Accuracy in extreme environments

In numerous field tests made with industrial customers, Temposonics report that its sensors have "left other position measuring systems far behind".

In lengths up to 2 m, these sensors provide uncompromised signals in these high vibration and shock applications, thus opening the road to many new industrial automation fields where applying sensors has traditionally been impractical. The forces applied during punching, pressing, nibbling or cutting in the metal working industry now have little or no influence on measurement accuracy. Another example is test machinery where high vibration is part of the normal workload.

Mobile hydraulics

In the mobile hydraulics industry, sensors are exposed to particularly difficult conditions that are largely beyond the control of the machine operator. Vehicles that must perform well 'on the move' in harsh environments require rugged sensors. The rod-style Temposonics position sensors for mobile hydraulics can be integrated completely inside hydraulic cylinders.

Temposonics sensors for mobile hydraulics applications incorporate the new high vibration technology from MTS. Heavy-duty mobile machines such as rock crushers and excavators, or applications where pistons reach the end position at high speed, offer a wide field of applications for the highly resistant mobile hydraulics sensors.

Pressure-resistant position sensors

Protected by a specially reinforced stainless steel pipe, Temposonics sensors are able to measure positions with high reliability and accuracy under high pressure. An additional benefit to this new option is low sensor deflection, eliminating the need for supporting structures. Lifting building blocks by means of heavy load lifting equipment, intelligent building monitoring, deep-sea applications and heavy machinery construction are a few examples of the possibilities.

Some facts and figures:

* 1.4305/AISI 304 stainless steel hydraulic pipe.

* Operating pressure up to 80 MPa.

* Peak pressure up to 120 MPa.

* Pipe OD 12,7 mm.

* Thread M22 x 1,5 to ISO 262.

* Standard 46 mm spanner required.

An integrated quality management system firmly established at MTS ensures quality that meets all the requirements of DIN ISO 9001:2000 and has been certified since 1994. As a comprehensive management system, it covers all units of the company's activity.
