Profibus connectivity for Quantum processors

April 2006 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

ProSoft Technology, represented in southern Africa by Throughput Technologies, recently released its PTQ-PDPMV1 and PTQ-PDPS ProTalk Q modules. These modules are suitable for connecting Schneider Electric Quantum processors as V0/V1 Masters and Slaves on a Profibus network.

These new Profibus solutions from ProSoft Technology have been designed to address the expanding interest in Schneider Electric controller solutions and Profibus in industrial automation applications. Typically these are in water/waste water, food and beverage, power and oil and gas industries, scada and DCS applications.

In-chassis modules from ProSoft Technology offer a number of features and benefits to Schneider Electric Quantum users including:

* Cost effective single slot solution.

* Backplane compatibility with Quantum (Concept and Unity) processors.

* Easy configuration (ProSoft Configuration Builder software).

* Fast implementation.

* Reduced commissioning times.

Both Master and Slave modules from ProSoft Technology support complete Profibus specifications according to IEC 61158 standard. The PTQ-PDPMV1 Profibus DP V0/V1 Master module, in particular, supports Acyclic parameter data transfer with Class 1 or Class 2 DPV1 services, allowing processors to easily communicate with slave devices supporting Profibus DP V0/V1 protocol.

From the application point of view, each ProTalk Q module acts as a gateway between the Profibus network and the Quantum processor. Deeper inside the system, the data transfer from the processor is asynchronous with the I/O data transfer on the Profibus network. Databases are user-defined and stored in the module to hold the data required by the protocol.

The ProTalk Q module configuration/debug serial port is used to connect a PC to the module for configuration, status, monitoring, and troubleshooting; cable is included with product shipment. Also delivered with the module, comes the simple-to-use ProSoft Configuration Builder software. After editing on a PC, the configuration file is downloaded and stored on the PTQ module in a non-volatile compact flash memory.

Developed under licence from Schneider Electric, the ProTalk Q modules incorporate the controller manufacturer's proprietary backplane technology that enables powerful data exchange with Quantum processors. Other modules available in the ProTalk Q range include HART, EtherNet/IP, DNP 3.0, IEC60870-5-101, 103 and 104.

ProSoft Technology

ProSoft Technology specialises in the development of wireless communication, standalone gateways for protocol interface, in-chassis protocol interface products as well as in-rack flow computers for Schneider Electric. Over the last 15 years, ProSoft Technology's product lines have grown to more than 400 communication modules supporting tens of different protocols. ProSoft Technology's product brands are: ProTalk (for Schneider Electric) and inRAx (for Rockwell Automation) in-rack communications or application modules for programmable controllers, ProLinx standalone industrial gateways, and RadioLinx industrial wireless solutions.

Loop signature Part 2-2: Feedforward Control: Part 1
Michael Brown Control Engineering Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
Feedforward control is a powerful technique that can dramatically improve control variance in cases where load changes cause big deviations from setpoint and the actual process dynamics are too slow to allow the feedback controller to operate fast enough to catch these disturbances.
