Filter explosion prevention
March 2006
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
The continual threat of explosion in electrostatic precipitators is a plant engineer's nightmare. Emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) gases from the furnace process pose a continuous threat. In order to minimise the risk of explosion the process must continually be monitored for build up of hazardous gases.
While carbon monoxide explosion level is only 12,5% by volume the addition of high temperatures and other gases compound the problem. Other problems arising in monitoring these applications are high dust loads.
Environmental Process Analytics has formulated a strategy to combat CO monitoring problems with the use of the Gasco ESP monitoring system.
The Gasco ESP system comprises of an infrared gas analyser, sampling system and process probe connections. The problem of high temperatures is combated by the use of robust high temperature probes from 400 up to 1200°C environments. An additional modular Peltier cooling system is also available. Dust problems are combated by a high efficiency filtration system and a low flow indication is standard. As the system has high temperature process cooling efficiency there is no need for long sample lines, this allows quicker response time and therefore increases speed of response to changing conditions and increased safety. The complete system is modular and can easily be upgraded to accommodate changing plant conditions.
The standard analyser range is 0-3,00% by volume, other ranges are also available. On board display is via four digit LCD and alarms have LED status indicators. Standard outputs are 0-20, 4-20 mA, two adjustable relay outputs are also available.

Cooling tower bleed control
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
Cooling towers rely on evaporation to remove heat, but this process also concentrates dissolved solids in the system. Left unmanaged, this buildup can lead to scaling, corrosion and fouling, reducing efficiency and increasing maintenance costs.
