Industrial Ethernet solution

March 2006 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

The applicom Industrial Ethernet solution provides high speed deterministic communication from PC applications to PLCs and I/O modules of the major vendors: Alstom, Altus, GE Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Omron, Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Siemens, etc. It is available in both hardware and software formats, depending on the user's project requirements. All the protocols can be run simultaneously.

Hardware solution

PCU2000ETH is intended for medium and large scale applications that require reliability, flexibility and performance. Consisting of an applicom Ethernet card (available on PCI and Expanded PCI bus), its on-card processor allows the embedding, execution, management and processing of industrial protocols without taking any CPU time from the user's computer.

With the applicom NDIS driver, the PCI2000ETH may be used as a standard Ethernet card (for office use, Ethernet PLC programming...) Combo solution: An optional serial port enables the card to communicate with multiple networks such as Profibus or Serial protocols, using exactly the same software interfaces.

Software solution

SW1000ETH provides an economical solution suitable for embedded and light architecture such as laptop, panel PC, MMI, etc. The software solution enables a standard network interface card (3COM, NE2000...) to connect to industrial equipment. If the applications need more performance in the future, the applicom software solution can easily migrate to the applicom hardware solution with the PCU2000ETH, as the APIs are identical.

With SW1000ETH, the user can choose between two I/O tags level (µ1000 or Full) to adapt the budget to the real I/O project requirements. Applicom Software Package Protocol, ASPP program - the SW1000ETH Ethernet solution package also includes the SW1000SER applicom Serial Software solution (using a standard serial COM port) for the same family manufacturer protocol if available.

Two solutions, one set of tools and APIs

The applicom 'All in One' solution brings together all the components in a unique package to manage communication: configuration and diagnostic tools, OS driver, application interfaces such as OPC, DDE, FastDDE/SuiteLink, DAServer data servers, ActiveX control, DLL library.

Case History 190: Measurement problem ruins level control.
Michael Brown Control Engineering Editor's Choice Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
The widely held belief in many plants that tuning will solve all base layer control problems is completely fallacious. Bad tuning is generally not the main reason for loops to perform badly. It is important when performing optimisation that all elements in a loop are considered, in addition to the control strategy, before even thinking of tuning.
