Fieldbus diagnostic monitor

March 2006 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

MTL has improved its design of its FBT-6 Fieldbus diagnostic monitor. The FBT-6 Fieldbus monitor is a handheld device that allows field personnel to perform a variety of physical layer tests to troubleshoot and commission Fieldbus segments. The FBT-6 builds on the Relcom FBT-3 Fieldbus tester that is established as a standard for Fieldbus H1 test equipment. Additional features have been built into the FBT-6 based on feedback from experienced users of the FBT-3.

Fieldbus diagnostic monitors are most often purchased by end-users and used by their maintenance personnel. Main systems suppliers also use the Fieldbus diagnostic monitors during acceptance testing and for troubleshooting.

MTL reports that its FBT-3 Fieldbus tester is well liked by Fieldbus users, and it has received a lot of valuable feedback on its use. Ninety percent of the ideas for improvement received have been built into the new FBT-6 Fieldbus diagnostic monitor, such as:

* Noise measurement in 3 bands: Fieldbus frequency' low frequency and high frequency. Knowing the frequency of the noise can help identify the cause of the noise.

* Monitor signal level for all devices.

* Monitor signal to shield faults.

* Network retransmissions.

* Reduces commissioning time.

* Download data to PC via USB port. The FBT-6 is supplied with a software utility and USB driver, supporting Windows XP. Automatic data collection and documentation.

* Hazardous area certification. Certification for connecting FBT-6 to intrinsically safe and non-incendive field wiring Fieldbus systems without the need for a gas clearance certificate is in progress.

The Relcom FBT-6 Fieldbus diagnostic monitor is designed for use with Foundation Fieldbus H1 networks.

Case History 190: Measurement problem ruins level control.
Michael Brown Control Engineering Editor's Choice Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
The widely held belief in many plants that tuning will solve all base layer control problems is completely fallacious. Bad tuning is generally not the main reason for loops to perform badly. It is important when performing optimisation that all elements in a loop are considered, in addition to the control strategy, before even thinking of tuning.
