B&W Industrial Technology, a division of Set Point Industrial Technology, has completed an electrical and instrumentation contract in Angola.
The project for the upgrade of Unit 650 at Fina Refinery in Luanda had to be complete within the tight deadline necessitated by the shutdown of the plant, and called for B&W to work with old lead sleeved cables, which had to be specifically handled and involved intricate lead wiping.
The contract involved the removing of the existing 1960 pneumatic system and replacing it with modern technology. According to Henry Gibson, Quality Control Manager of B&W, the project involved the testing and installation of field electrical equipment together with the associated cabling, the formalised checking, testing and full system check of the installation. "Our responsibility, in a nutshell, was to upgrade the equipment and ensure that the field signals got to the DCS panel and to verify that they were communicating with the correct analog channels," said Gibson.
B&W's contract also embraced the provision of cable racking, the building and equipment earthing, light fittings, control stations, small power accessories as well as miscellaneous items such as supporting structures for luminaries, distribution boards, isolator stations, junction boxes, stop-start stations and other miscellaneous items.
B&W recently expanded its instrumentation division to offer clients comprehensive service equal to that it offers in its specialist electrical field. The company identified opportunities within the petrochemical and mining industries for its comprehensive instrumentation service and the Angola project is typical of this. Offering both electrical and instrumentation expertise to these sectors, the company has expanded this with the addition of new personnel and technology.
Instrumentation services offered cover: networking, calibration, pre-commissioning and commissioning. It also has the expertise, together with Set Point's other group companies, to handle lump sum turnkey instrumentation projects which include the supply of control systems, switchgear and erection commissioning.
