Pulverised fuel sampler
September 2005
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
M&W Asketeknik's PFS-A-SL is a portable instrument designed for sampling and flow measuring of pulverised coal in the fuel pipes between mills and burners, according to ISO 9931. The sampler is introduced into the fuel pipe through an airlock (dustless connection), and the coal sample is collected in an exchangeable container attached to the sampler. The sampling probe is connected to an electric motor that enables it to rotate. A PLC in the control box ensures isokinetic extraction, and calculates the coal flow in the pipe.
Only one person is required to operate the instrument. Typical applications include extracting isokinetic and representative samples for determining the particle size of coal and other parameters, and routine and special measurements of coal flow in fuel pipes. The sampler ensures minimum NOX emissions and minimised slagging, fouling and fireside corrosion. Fuel savings are increased by minimising excess air, downtime is reduced, and quality fly ash is obtainable for commercial use instead of disposal.
The control unit is equipped with a PLC that controls the isokinetic velocity of the extraction air, as well as the performance of the complete sampling cycle. Based on electronic signals from the built-in scale weighing the sample, the PLC calculates the total mass flow of pulverised coal in the complete cross section. A snap-lock coupling makes the connection and disconnection fast and easy.
