New Belgium Brewing Company in Colorado uses the luminescent dissolved oxygen (LDO) technology to monitor its process water. The LDO technology allows users to enjoy maintenance free usage.
The probe has only one replacement part, the sensor cap, which is inexpensive, simple to replace and is guaranteed for one year. This probe does not require probe polarisation, it has no electrolyte solution to poison or to replace, and no cathodes or anodes to polish. With production of 320 000 barrels of beer in 2004, and a commitment to environment quality, the New Belgium Brewing Company is saving a tremendous amount of time, monitoring its water using this latest technology.
Unlike traditional electrodes, the Hach LDO sensor from PREI Instrumentation is coated with a luminescent material. Blue light from an LED is transmitted to the sensor surface where it excites the luminescent material. When the luminescent material relaxes it emits red light. The time from when the blue light was sent and the red light is emitted is measured. The more oxygen that is present the shorter the time it takes for the red light to be emitted. This time is measured and correlated to the oxygen concentration. A red LED is incorporated into the sensor as an internal reference. Because the sensor is not affected by pH swings, hydrogen sulphide, chemicals or heavy metals it produces a stable, accurate measurement. Warm up or polarisation time is not required and it never has to be calibrated.
