Flexible flue gas analysis
June 2005
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
Often more than just a portable flue gas analyser is necessary to meet the many different applications in industrial systems.
For instance in the power generating industry, with its different setups and combustion processes, a flexible analyser system is required. Long-term measurements for assessments of different process cycles are important. However, the ability to react to different system set-ups, the option of monitoring additional parameters (eg, ambient temperature, mA/mV, etc) and the ability to simultaneously sample at different measurement points are essential requirements of a versatile analyser system.
Testo has developed an analyser system that (depending on the application) can monitor several analysis boxes (each equipped with different measurement cells), up to 10 dataloggers can be connected via the data bus over distances of up to 1 km. All units can be controlled, read out or programmed via the control unit or via the PCMCIA card of a computer. This single, unique measuring system can meet the requirements of virtually any application.
Each Testo 350XL analysis box has the ability to hold up to six different measuring cells and can measure parameters such as flue gas, differential pressure for measuring pressure in combustion chambers, ambient air temperature and velocity. The Testo 350XL in combination with the Testo 454 dataloggers measures temperature, humidity, velocity, indoor air quality, rpm, pressure and current or voltage.
This concept enables the user to perform checks on tunnel burners in the different combustion zones as well as simultaneous inspection of several burners in a boiler, adjustment checks on filter systems in burners and long-term monitoring of critical systems. In power stations, it is now possible to monitor flue gases from the combustion chamber all the way to the stack simultaneously, by using multiple analysers connected via database, whilst having all the advantages of a portable system.
