Flue gas analyser for new air quality standards
May 2005
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
Two new standards for air quality, SANS 69 and SANS 1929, have recently been published, which emphasise the management of ambient air quality and give limits to common air pollutants. Testo has introduced a portable flue gas analyser that is able to monitor various gas pollutants mentioned in the new standards. Additionally, up to six different parameters can be measured simultaneously, thus ensuring effective control of air quality.
In essence, SANS 69 defines the basic principles of a strategy for ambient air quality management in South Africa. The aim of this strategy is to avoid, prevent or reduce harmful effects on human health and the environment as a whole, taking into account technical, economic, social, political and strategic considerations. SANS 1929 is closely linked to SANS 69 and gives limit values for common air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, etc, to ensure that the negative effects of such pollutants on human health is prevented or reduced.
To determine whether the concentrations of these pollutants are within the limits of the new legislation, it is essential to measure all required parameters on-site and as close to the stack as possible - ie, as close to the pollutant as possible.
A European leader in measuring instruments, testo, has introduced a portable flue gas analyser that can measure numerous gases mentioned in the new air quality bill and enables the user to get near to the pollutant and, thus, take accurate readings. The testo 350XL is also able to monitor up to six different gases simultaneously, due to its ability to hold up to six different measurement cells. This unit can also measure differential pressure in combustion chambers, ambient air and flue gas temperature and velocity. As a result, optimal management of air quality can be achieved.
Several testo 350 analyser boxes (each equipped with different measurement cells) and up to 10 testo dataloggers (which measure parameters such as temperature, humidity, velocity, indoor air quality, rpm, pressure and current or voltage) can be linked to one control unit or via the PCMCIA card to a computer. Consequently, a complete analyser system can be created that, depending on the application, can monitor numerous parameters in different sections at the same time. Example applications could include tunnel burners in the different combustion zones, several burners in a boiler or filter systems in various burners.
The testo 305 can also calculate efficiency of the burner; thus assisting in reducing fuel costs and ensuring better product quality.
