Swedish company, Westermo Teleindustri, represented in southern Africa by Throughput Technologies, has released its new managed Ethernet ring switch. The LR300 LynxSwitch is suitable for use in harsh industrial environmental locations. With a wide temperature range (-40 to +70°C) and no moving parts or electrolytic capacitors, as well as redundant power input (10 to 60 V d.c.) with polarity protection, the user can be confident that the switches will perform irrespective of the location. With up to 200 switches supported in a ring, it offers great performance and flexibility to the user.
The fast re-configuration of networks topology (FRNT) concept offers ultra fast reconfiguration (30 ms) of the network topology. The FRNT concept eliminates failures caused by network links and/or switches. Fast re-configuration is critical in industrial application, where any delay period can severely affect performance or safety factors of the control system. Management of the LR300 switches is easy and is done by the user through a Windows-based IP configuration tool. The tool comes free with the switch and any of the Ethernet ports on the switch can be used for this purpose. Thus, no serial port is required for setting the configuration parameter on the LR300 switch. This means that the LR300 can be mounted and installed prior to configuration.
The switch comes in a number of versions to fulfil specifications to certain industries, with switches specifically designed for general industry, marine, railways, substation automation and military applications.
Port combinations
The LR300 series offers full flexibility regarding port combinations. Copper (TX), multimode (MM) fibre and/or single mode (SM) fibre can be combined on the same switch.
Standard combinations are:
* LR306 - six ports 10/100Base TX.
* LR307F1 - one port fibre, single- or multimode, six ports 10/100Base TX.
* LR308F2 - two ports fibre, single- or multimode, six ports 10/100Base TX.
Orders have already been received for two southern African mining applications, and the LynxSwitch LR300 looks set to provide users with high performance.
Introduction to Part 2 loop signatures and process transfer functions
Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
The previous series of loop signature articles dealt with the basics of control loop optimisation, and concentrated on troubleshooting and ‘SWAG’ tuning of simple processes. In this new series, consideration will be given to dealing practically with more difficult issues like interactive processes, and with processes with much more complex dynamics.
