Endress+Hauser recently donated five computers valued at R20 000 to M.C. Weiler Primary School in Alexandra Township, and refurbished the school library, as part of its on-going social responsibility programme.
The learners, in their refurbished library, celebrate the arrival of the new computers
M.C. Weiler Primary School was identified with the assistance of the Alex Renewal Project, not only as an institution in desperate need of assistance, but also as one that consistently displayed a remarkable level of commitment to its learners. "The teachers and governing body of M.C. Weiler achieve so much with so little and we are convinced that they will make the most of this contribution," states Grant Joyce, marketing manager, Endress+Hauser.
"Most organisations tend to focus on funding tertiary and secondary learners and institutions, as this is of immediate benefit to their business. Although we do not receive any direct pay-back from this initiative, we believe that supporting primary school education is of great significance to our community's future," Joyce explains.
The five machines donated are all new and up-to-date and Windows, XP and Office 2000 have been installed. However, software also requires substantial financial input and, to this end, Endress+Hauser will assist M.C. Weiler in finding open source software, which can be accessed at no extra cost. In addition, staff from Endress+Hauser will conduct weekly training for the teachers until such time as they are fully computer literate. To complete this year's contribution, Endress+Hauser donated paint for the library, while the school's teachers and members of the community volunteered their time and labour.
Endress+Hauser will continue to contribute R20 000 worth of support to M.C. Weiler on an annual basis. These funds will go towards needs specifically identified by the school's governing body and teachers. The company has also earmarked HIV/AIDS as an area of concern within the community.
