A cooperative technical training initiative by Eskom Learning Institutions and Siemens Automation and Drives has resulted in the establishment of a complete SITRAIN (Siemens Training for Energy and Industry) facility situated inside the Eskom Learning Institutions at the electricity utility's Convention Centre in Dale Road, Midrand.
Officially opened by Dr Klaus Döring, chief executive of Siemens Southern Africa and Ravi Moodley, Eskom's learning institutions manager, on 11 November 2004, demand at the facility is estimated at around 10 000 student days per year for Siemens Energy and Industry product training across a range of equipment, including large and standard drives, automation systems, process instrumentation and switchgear.
Des Burrows, service and support manager at Siemens Automation and Drives, says this facility is the result of a cooperation agreement between Eskom Learning Institutions and Siemens to provide a total training solution for the company's learners.
"With all the equipment covered installed in the SITRAIN facility, the learners can immediately apply in a practical way what they have learned theoretically, after which they are tested and their competence is certified," adds Burrows.
SITRAIN is offered as a service to all of the company's customers, and in light of the large volume of business done with Eskom Learning Institutions and the number of power stations with Siemens equipment and instrumentation, advanced level training is provided for the company.
"Eskom benefits by having a supplier on-site providing up-to-date training that exposes the company's trainees to the latest technology available in automation, drives, instrumentation and control systems," says Burrows. "An added benefit for the customer is that accommodation is made available for learners who attend courses from outside the immediate area."
