With the possibility for a number of different measurement systems, Endress + Hauser has released an automatic measurement station with integrated water sampler for continuous monitoring of online parameters in liquid media.
The CE 4 measurement station offers a complete and compact turnkey system for online monitoring and recording of the most important parameters in the water/wastewater industry. The system consists of modules, including electronics, water sampler, analysis and accessories, which can be specifically adapted to individual measurement tasks - all components are installed in a stainless steel waterproof cabinet.
As standard, pH value and temperature, redox potential, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and turbidity measurement systems can be integrated into the CE 4 station. Additional measurements include SAC (Spectral Absorption Coefficient), nitrate, chlorine, and chlorinedioxide. Other parameters can be included on request.
The principle is simple: from the sampling point, the medium is fed through a PVC pipework system incorporating various sensors. Transmitters, mounted in the electronic compartment, send the measured values to the data recorder (eg, Eco-Graph or Memo-Graph) from where it can be relayed to a PC using the built-in RS232 or RS485 interface, modem, Profibus or by using a ATA flash card.
"In order to complete a more in-depth laboratory analysis of the medium an ASP-Station 2000 stationary water sampler can be integrated into the station. Samples are taken using the vacuum principle on a timed, quantity proportional or event controlled basis. The samples are then distributed in compliance with EN25567 into individual bottles where they are stored at a constantly controllable temperature (for example, 4°C)," says Grant Joyce, marketing manager, Endress + Hauser.
A modular design adds to the station's flexibility: measurement parameters can be quickly and easily retrofitted to adapt to specific requirements, while the use of standard sensors ensures a simple calibration process. A user-friendly and easy-to-maintain design has resulted in easy access to all sensors, simple cleaning with the option of an automatic cleaning system option, and overpressure monitoring to act as an early warning system for blockages. "As soon as the pressure in the pipework reaches a set point, the feed pump is automatically switched off, thus avoiding mechanical or water damage to the system," Joyce explains.
The measurement station can be used for self-monitoring at domestic and industrial treatment plants or in a control capacity to boost efficiencies in operations. It can also be applied in the analysis of process and control cleaning systems, as well as monitoring of industrial discharge. In surface- and drinking water applications the CE 4 station can perform quality monitoring in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and distribution points, as well as effectively monitoring direct discharges and water supplies and sources.

Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
Cooling towers rely on evaporation to remove heat, but this process also concentrates dissolved solids in the system. Left unmanaged, this buildup can lead to scaling, corrosion and fouling, reducing efficiency and increasing maintenance costs.
