Integrated production control system

December 2004 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Yokogawa Electric Corporation has developed CENTUM CS 3000 R3 Release 3.05, an upgraded version of its flagship integrated production control system featuring enhanced functionality, including remote operation and monitoring. The new system has been available from 13 September, 2004. The CENTUM CS 3000 R3 production control system is designed for the control of petroleum, natural gas, chemical, and other small- to large-scale process-oriented plants.

Development background

In the development of the CENTUM CS 3000 R3, the guiding concepts have been that of (1) continuously adopting new functions while assuring continuity with existing functions, and (2) simultaneously pursuing both openness and reliability. This system is constantly being improved as the result of our never-ending efforts to support our customers and to develop and introduce cutting-edge technologies.

As a leading instrumentation manufacturer, Yokogawa continues to actively invest in research and development in order to meet its responsibilities to provide customers with state-of-the-art control systems for years to come. Placing a high priority on continuity and compatibility, Yokogawa is developing products so that customer assets including hardware, software, and product expertise can be used effectively with previously delivered products as well.

Firmly adhering to this stance, and with the aim of responding to customer needs, Yokogawa has made functional enhancements in this updated version that include the introduction of an open system architecture and the enhancement of remote operation and monitoring functions

Product features

Introduction of Vnet/IP, the most up-to-date control bus

Vnet/IP is a control bus capable of handling a maximum baud rate of 1 gigabit per second. Its development was based on general purpose Ethernet network technology and it takes advantage of the high levels of reliability and the realtime capability of the conventional control bus (V net). As a result, it is now possible to integrate control LANs with data LANs. Thus, the new system offers improved connectivity to higher-order operation support and advanced control systems.

Enhanced remote operation and monitoring functions

By using the terminal service function of Microsoft Windows Server 2003*, remote plant operation, monitoring, and engineering are possible from general-purpose PCs or mobile terminals not directly connected to the control bus. In addition, a maximum of eight remote operation and monitoring terminals (hereafter called clients) can be connected to the system. Accordingly, operation and monitoring is now possible from multiple clients, while in the past, only one client was available for operation and monitoring. Remote operation, monitoring, and safety capabilities are provided on the client side. A screen updating interval as short as one second and a window mode function that simultaneously displays multiple windows provides the system operator the same degree of convenience as when working with the operation and monitoring equipment in the instrument room. Advanced safety features are also provided, such as an automatic logoff when the system is not used for a specific period of time.

Yokogawa's approach toward this field

Yokogawa released the world's first distributed control system (DCS) in 1975 and has shipped more than 16 000 systems since then. With the significant improvements in productivity that have been made possible by these systems, DCS use spread rapidly in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. Those systems introduced during the 1980s are now due for replacement, and this replacement demand is expected to grow over the next several years. Through its continued efforts at product development, Yokogawa will ensure the stable product availability and technological edge that users value, and will prevail in the global market competition.
