Combustion and emission monitoring

November 2000 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Rosemount Analytical has combined its new CAT continuous analyser transmitter with a sample handling system (SHS) to offer a compact, modular continuous emissions nonitoring (CEMS) solution. The new CAT CEMS package eliminates the need for a costly and cumbersome analyser shelter and reduces other installation costs while offering the proven accuracy and rugged reliability of other Rosemount analytical solutions.

The reduced size and rugged packaging of this CAT-based CEMS allows the analyser system to be mounted closer to the process. Local mounting eliminates sample line measurement delays that are a major contributor to poor analyser response. The CAT is suitable for high temperature process, tropical and desert applications with ambient operating temperatures up to 65°C.

The CAT is easy to use, operate and maintain. A touchpad offers local instrument access without opening the housing, which reduces downtime. It uses a twist-off cover that has no cumbersome bolting, making it easy to service.

Being modular, it can be configured for single and/or multicomponent gas analysis. It measures thousands of gases including oxygen, sulphur dioxide, methane, hydrogen and nitrogen. Within several months, detectors will be added to measure aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, fluorinated and chlorinated hydrocarbons, trace oxygen and NOx measurements. The instrument has demonstrated noteworthy ultra-low-range accuracy for carbon monoxide and several other critical gases.

Part of Fisher-Rosemount's PlantWeb field-based architecture, it is compatible with the DeltaV scalable process control system. Multicomponent, multitechnology gas analysis is performed in an explosion-proof enclosure. Housed in a Class I, Zone I (IIB) + H 2 approved transmitter-style enclosure the detector can be field mounted in the harshest environmental conditions.

Features include:

* Single, dual or three channel multicomponent analyser.

* CSA, NRTL and CE approved for Div I or Zone I Gr. IIB+H 2 environments.

* Supports NDIR, VIS, UV, paramagnetic O2, electrochemical O2 and thermal conductivity detectors.

* Easy access to set-up and viewing screens without disassembly or shut-off.

* Eliminates high cost shelters for increased response time and process efficiency.

* Simple, fast service and maintenance procedures.

* Operates as a standalone analyser or as a part of an analyser network.

A new O2/combustibles analyser from Rosemount Analytical's Process Analytic Division offers easy installation, field-repairability and the ability to transmit process and diagnostic information directly to the control room. The OCX 4400 O2/combustibles transmitter uses the same technology that is used in Rosemount Analytical's Oxymitter 4000 in situ oxygen transmitter and adds a robust combustibles sensor for improved trim control and process, equipment and safety monitoring in process heater and process boiler applications.

The OCX 4400 integrates the electronics and sensor housings into a rugged, compact instrument that provides accurate, repeatable and stable measurements in process temperatures up to 2600°F (1427°C). The integral sensor and electronics eliminates the need for cabling between the sensor housing and the electronics housing, reducing installation costs.

The OCX 4400 is claimed to be the only O2/combustibles analyser that communicates enhanced diagnostic, calibration and set-up information directly to a central monitoring location using HART communications. This protocol facilitates consistent communication from virtually anywhere. The OCX 4400 also links into Fisher-Rosemount's PlantWeb field-based architecture and is compatible with and supported by the Fisher-Rosemount DeltaV, Ovation and AMS host systems. CSA, FM and Cenelec certifications for hazardous area applications are pending and this analyser will also offer Foundation Fieldbus communications in the near future.

With the inclusion of the above product, Rosemount Analytical now offers oxygen analysers for all applications, from percent and trace analysers for process analysis to zirconium oxide-based oxygen analysers for combustion flue gas analysis.
