Gas detection equipment available for hire

November 2000 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Good news for contractors is that environmental gas detection equipment can now be rented from MSA Africa, one of Africa's largest suppliers and manufacturers of safety equipment.

Large companies in the mining, construction, engineering, gas, oil and general heavy industry have become far more safety conscious and most have comprehensive safety programmes in place. Subsequently many contractors conducting short-term contracts at these industrial sites are now required to meet strict safety standards as prescribed by the client.

The problem is who should supply the safety equipment for contractors in order that they comply with these safety standards. If the employer were to supply the equipment, they would have to have adequate equipment for their own employees as well as the contractor's employees - in most instances this does not make financial sense. And even though most large companies keep surplus gas detection equipment for emergencies, there is rarely enough to meet the needs of contractors, for example, during a plant shutdown.

As a result, most contractors - if they want to be awarded the contract they are tendering for - have to purchase expensive safety equipment that they do not use in their normal course of business. MSA Africa's gas detection equipment rental programme solves this problem. The programme is designed to suit the need of contractors involved in short-term contracts (one day to one month) as well as longer-term contracts (one month to six months). The end result is that the total cost of the equipment (including contract fees, insurance and maintenance) is usually less than it would cost the contractor to purchase the equipment as new.

After a six-to-12 months of renting an instrument, MSA Africa will dispose of the equipment at a reduced cost to small business enterprises. This equipment will be fully serviced and will be warranteed against defect by MSA Africa.

Training

MSA Africa consults with contractors on their exact requirements before making recommendations on safety equipment. Free training of contract employees is provided on a once-off basis. Once training is completed employees are certified as competent in the use of the instruments in question.

The MSA Africa rental programme provides both peace of mind for the employer and contractor, as well as ensuring proper safety on site, thus offering better protection to all staff.
