Reducing the cost of retractable pH installations

November 2000 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

An accurate pH reading depends on the calibration of the pH electrode and its ability to measure efficiently. Even the best probe cannot measure when it has become soiled with process deposit. Therefore, the probe assembly must be flexible enough to allow retraction, cleansing and even calibration under process conditions.

In today's process industry, retractable pH assemblies are synonymous with high cost. Endress + Hauser has addressed this issue and has introduced the new Cleanfit range of affordable retractable pH assemblies.

This assembly can be used in a wide range of applications, varying from the rough and tough applications in the paper and pulp industry to the sanitary and hygienic areas found in, for instance, the food industry and also for application in the chemical and power generation environment. There are fully sterilisable versions available specifically for the food industry and a version for the paper and pulp industry that poses a big challenge of providing a tight enclosure in the high fibre applications.

Another challenge with regard to retractable assemblies revolves around safety. It should be possible for an operator to remove electrodes without risk of damage to himself or the environment. The Cleanfit retractable holder for use with a standard 120 mm long gel electrode, allows the user completely safe operation, with mechanical safety mechanisms eliminating the need for electronic checks. The holders can be manually or pneumatically retracted. To provide a solution for any process application, the holders come with an assortment of process connections and various types of materials, stainless steel, PVDF or PEEK, handling process temperatures of up to 130°C.

With cost savings from the Cleanfit on every pH electrode change, the unit makes for a good investment in any installation.
