Results of instrumentation and automation survey
September 2004
News
This month we look at some 'turnover per employee statistics' published in the results of the Industrial Instrumentation Group's (IIG) survey of the South African instrumentation and automation conducted in early 2004. The results were derived looking from the statistics of the first two questions relating to company turnover and number of employees in each company, (see SA Instrumentation & Control, August 2004).
Results
The spread of results is shown in Figure 1.
Turnover per employee
The average turnover per employee was calculated by taking the sum of all the respondent's revenues (R2 908 347 097) and dividing that by the total number of employees (2693). The resulting turnover per employee is R1 095 004. The median turnover per employee was observed to be R800 000. The mode (most common) turnover per employee was observed to be R750 000 (six respondents).
The lowest observed turnover per employee (Min) was an exceptionally low R112 500. It is the considered opinion that this value is in all likelihood an aberration and that the next lowest value of R170 000 was probably a closer reflection of the true minimum. The highest turnover per employee was observed to be R3 310 000.
It should be noted that the 'in companies' whose revenues rely more heavily on the supply of services rather than product sales, this figure was generally observed to be considerably lower. This is not unexpected as the profit margins and turnover in service-based-companies are likely to be different to those in product-based-companies. As the research questions did not ask how staff resources were allocated within the respondent's companies, it was not possible to empirically calculate the variance between service and product-based-companies.
