Results of instrumentation and automation survey

August 2004 News

This month we look at some 'employee statistics' derived from results of the Industrial Instrumentation Group's (IIG) survey of the South African instrumentation and automation industry the IIG conducted in early 2004.

Question

Following on from the first question relating to company turnover (see SA Instrumentation & Control, July 2004), the participating companies were asked, "How many persons are employed by your company? If your company has other non-automation/control divisions, do not count those people employed by the other divisions eg, Siemens should only report the number of employees in the South African division of Siemens Automation & Drives".

Results

The results were as follows:

115 companies provided their company's turnover and their number of employees. The total number of respondents' employees was found to be 2693. The median value was 11 employees, with the mean being 23. The maximum number of employees was reported to be 170.

The histogram depicted by Figure 1 shows the distribution of number of employees in the company vs the number of companies that employ that number of people.

As with the revenues, a strong skewing of the sample is shown. 40 (35%) of companies employ 80% (2154) of the total (2693) number of employees. Similarly, 20% of the 115 companies employ 64% (1734) of total (2693) number of employees.
