Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Instruments suitable for modern environmental considerations

The 8th International Environmental Health Congress was held in Durban from 21 to 27 February. The main theme, 'Our people, Our World, a key to global Environmental Health Development' pointed out the focus of this congress, which was the health of communities around the world.

Environmental health is divided into two categories:

1. Occupational health dealing with topics such as heat stress, safety issues and work related illnesses at various workplaces.

2. Environmental health itself covering issues of pollution control (environmental, air, water and food).

The key environmental health issues that were covered during presentations, talks and exhibitions were environmental health management, food management and safety (HACCP), risk assessment and management, waste management, occupational health and safety and water, sanitation and pollution control.

The outcome of this conference is the increasing need to measure and monitor variables in all these fields. New legislation is being passed and guidelines are being reinforced in order to force industries, businesses and individuals to reach certain target values concerning the environment. New emission legislation is on its way and in the near future companies will be penalised for not reaching their target values. Local authorities around the country will have to put these guidelines and legislations into place.

During the congress the Testo product stand, set up by Unitemp, was acknowledged by receiving the first prize. Testo exhibited a wide range of products that address the issues discussed at the conference. These products are easy to use and are recommended by the German government.

Testo products range from normal thermometers to complex flue gas analysers. Calibration certificates are available for all instruments, and Testo is proud of the reliability of its instruments. The range of multifunctional instruments is well suited to the measurement of variables concerning environmental or occupational health - for example, the Testo 400 can measure temperature, humidity, pressure, velocity, CO and CO2 levels as well as heat stress. Therefore, it is an appropriate instrument for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) measurements.
