Portable flue gas oxygen analyser for optimising burn mixture

April 2004 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Safe and economic combustion of gas and fuel oils relies on the correct ratio of fuel and air being provided to the burner. The traditional method to achieve this was very subjective, as it relied on the commissioning engineer's skill and experience for 'reading' the flame. The telltale colour would indicate whether or not the flame was burning on or off ratio.

A more accurate method, which did not rely on the engineer to make the decision, is to use an oxygen analyser in the flue gas. This can be a permanent installation - but more often than not, the flue gas can be analysed by a handheld device, which is used to set up the burner initially and then on periodic maintenance occasions, to check that nothing has changed in the meantime.

North American, a world-class manufacturer and supplier of combustion equipment, has an analyser, which is both easy and economical to use. Weighing under 500 g, it is portable and is powered by four AA batteries. The 8108 is accurate to ±0,2% and is equipped with a self draining water trap to preserve the oxygen cell. It uses no messy and expensive chemicals and has a re-usable sponge filter. It also has a low battery light and a calibration knob for quick and easy calibration. Supplied in a protective case with batteries and extension tubing, it is ready for use.

Operation consists of inserting the stainless steel probe into a prepared hole on the flue stack or duct and pressing the start button. The sample is automatically taken and the results displayed on the easy to read digital display. Continuous sampling and reading is also possible.
