Portable dissolved oxygen probe

April 2004 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

A portable dissolved oxygen instrument that uses the luminescent technology (LDO) is now available from PREI Instrumentation. There are no membranes, no anodes or cathodes, and no electrolyte solutions. Maintenance consists merely wiping the sensor with a wet rag.

The LDO probe has an inexpensive replaceable sensor cap, which is guaranteed for one year. The sensor cap is coated with a luminescent material. Blue light from an LED is transmitted to the sensor surface. The blue light excites the luminescent material. As the material relaxes it emits red light. The time from when the blue light was sent and the red light is emitted is measured. The more oxygen that is present the shorter the time it takes for the red light to be emitted. This time is measured and correlated to the oxygen concentration. Between the flashes of the blue light a red LED is flashed on the sensor and used as an internal reference. Calibration is not necessary.

Because the sensor is not affected by pH swings, hydrogen sulphide, wastewater chemicals or heavy metals, the Hach LDO probe produces more stable and accurate measurements for a longer time. No warm-up period for the probe polarisation is required - plug in the probe and it is ready - and there is no need to keep the probe moist. The probe is pre-calibrated and no user-calibration is necessary for the lifetime of the sensor. Other features are no stirring required, replaceable sensor caps have a guaranteed 1-year life, rated IP67, internal data logging of up to 500 readings, optional RS232 output, readings automatically corrected for pressure, temperature and salinity.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
