With increasing legislation and environmental pressures, reliable measurements of wastewater parameters are essential for the effective treatments of effluents. The simplest and most useful of these is pH, the measurement of acidity and alkalinity of the solution. It can be used to control the addition of reagents to neutralise a waste stream or enable precipitation of heavy metals.
Solution pH is the most common analytical measurement that is used in process control, because many chemical reactions rely upon the pH being maintained at the correct value.
LTH, the UK-based company, can provide sensor systems that can operate reliably up to temperatures and pressures of 140°C at 2 MPa. Redox measurements can control the addition of reagents to treat toxic chemicals such as cyanide and render them harmless. Redox measurement is also used in cooling tower water and swimming pool water treatments.
LTH Instruments provide outputs for recording and direct control of dosing pumps or valves, with options for proportional control. Sensors are available in many different configurations for open tanks or pipe mounting. Self-cleaning and spray-wash adapters can be fitted to reduce maintenance in waste streams that may coat the sensor.
Typical applications for LTH pH and redox instrumentation and sensors include: pH neutralisation, cooling tower water treatments, precipitation, boiler condensate, swimming pool water treatments, concentration measurements of acids, alkalis and salt solution, reduction and oxidation of waste streams and metal finishing and pre-treatments.
There are various industries that can use these instruments such as: automotive, electroplaters, semiconductor manufacturers, mining, pharmaceutical, aerospace, steel manufacturing, water PLCs, dairy, brewing, food and beverage, pulp and paper and others.
One of the instruments that can be used for all applications is the MPD53 microprocessor pH/redox monitor. This instrument is recommended for all applications that require automatic sensor cleaning; either set point relays or the current output can be configured as a clean initiator. The clean duration, recovery time and interval period are all programmable. During the clean and recovery periods it is possible for the instrument to go off-line and hold the current outputs and disable the control relays.
This MPD53 has a large backlit multifunction display, which guides the operator effortlessly through the structured programming procedure, reducing the need to refer to the handbook. By providing the user with the flexibility to select either glass or antimony pH sensors or redox input, and operating with either single ended or differential inputs, means that a single instrument may be used for the majority of pH and redox applications.
