Industry hangs up the gloves to support education

April 2004 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

In what can certainly be described as the first venture of its kind, Bürkert Contromatic, Endress+Hauser and Siemens Automation & Drives, jointly opened the new Dr Georg Endress Instrumentation Training Facility at the Tshwane South College in February 2004. The college was previously known as the Pretoria West College.

The keynote speaker for the opening was Klaus Riemenschneider, President of the Supervisory Board of Endress+Hauser. He set the collaborative tone for the event with his profound comments on industrial networking protocols. "The coupling of intelligent field devices with standard networking protocols has and will further create tremendous opportunities to reduce wiring costs and installation times and will enable control engineers to construct control systems from components of different vendors, extend and modify them as requirements might change and avoid being at the mercy of a single vendor."

"The three companies have jointly sponsored the equipment used in the facility," said Siemens general manager, Control & Instrumentation, Steve Venter. "There is no doubt that this world-class facility puts Tshwane South College at the forefront of the instrumentation and control training fraternity in southern Africa."

"We are all extremely proud to bring such an outstanding service to an institution that services by-and-large a previously disadvantaged community," concluded Bürkert Contromatic managing director, Willem Bruwer.
