Triggered lightning protector

December 2003 Electrical Power & Protection

Phoenix Contact has developed the single-channel fully enclosed and triggered Flashtrab FLT 100 N/PE CTRL-1.5 Class B lightning protector especially for central power supplies. The protector contains trigger electronics that route the response voltage via the spark gap at a protective level of 1,5 kV. The lightning protector is designed for a rated conductor voltage of 260 V a.c. and uses arc-chopping technology. Despite its compact dimensions and closed design, the protector handles surge currents up to 100 kA of pulse form (10/350) µs. This protector is particularly suited to '3+1' connection for use between N and PE in TT and TN-S systems.

Featuring the same contour as the modular protector family, users can include the lightning protector in all applications with the MPB bridge system, generating practical advantages. The low trigger level means there is no need for additional decoupling coils. Phoenix Contact says that this is the first time that this active energy control (AEC) concept has been possible with triggered lightning protectors.
