Most temperature transducers have non-linear functions in relation to temperature. The physical properties that we use to derive the temperature reading are rarely linear. To use these in a control system or even for simple readout one linearises the physical property to the temperature scale.
The common transducers used for temperature are normally signal conditioned to standard instrumentation signals eg, 4 to 20 mA. However, one often encounters devices that are not commonly catered for. An example is an optical pyrometer.
Omniflex has released a programmable transmitter with the facility to linearise signals to suit specific applications. Simple (and free) PC-based software is used to implement the lineariser function and downloaded to the universal programmable transmitter using a programming cable.
The illustration shows graphically the input signal and required output.
The critical role of temperature measurement in flame hardening Instrotech
Temperature Measurement
Flame hardening is a heat treatment process widely used on parts made from mild steels, alloy steels, medium carbon steels and cast iron. Accurate temperature measurement is not just important, but critical for the success of flame hardening.
