Infrared gas sensing products grow in popularity

A recent addition to E2V Technologies' range include the new IR13BD and the IR14BD. The former has been designed to measure a broad range of flammable gases, including methane, ethylene, propane and benzene, while the latter is a more selective sensor measuring acetylene.

Infrared gas sensors operate by detecting changes in infrared radiation brought about by gases absorbing radiation when they enter into the sensor cavity. There is an infrared source inside the cavity along with two infrared detectors that are specifically tuned to sense the gases of interest. A range of gases can be selected by changing the optical filters in front of the infrared detectors. The concentration of the sensed gases can be deduced very simply from the measured change in infrared signal level.
