Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Endress+Hauser - a partner in wastewater

July 2011 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

A small wastewater treatment system is a wastewater plant that handles less than 2 Ml/day of effluent. This makes up quite a large portion of plants in South Africa – especially in rural villages and undulating terrains. The Water Institute of South Africa (WISA) has identified the sector as riddled with malfunctioning and non-compliant wastewater treatment plants.

Where these plants are not functioning to design specifications, the final effluent can cause serious health issues in communities that can ill afford it. There are enough challenges in this sector for WISA to have established the Small Wastewater Treatment Works Division within its organisation. According to chairman, Dr Valerie Naidoo, the division needs to drive the following:

* Green Drop certification for small wastewater plants.

* The solving of social and institutional challenges.

* An innovative management approach.

* Plant quality.

* Sustainability of wastewater treatment works (WWTWs).

The table focuses on the Green Drop criteria and where Endress+Hauser can assist with these certification requirements. The criteria for 2011’s audits can be seen in the table underneath.

In addition, the constitution of the Small Wastewater Treatment Works Suppliers Association (SEWPACKSA) has been accepted. The drive behind SEWPACKSA is to establish a minimum standard for small wastewater plants as some of these have received a bad reputation in the past. Endress+Hauser is looking forward to playing a part in the improvement of these plants through ensuring correct instrumentation is supplied for the various applications as well as providing a quality service to the industry.
