Forthcoming range of industrial PCs: Magelis IPC from Schneider Electric

March 2003 Industrial Computer Hardware

Modularity and user-friendliness are key elements of Schneider Electric’s hardened industrial PC offer. Benefiting from the ruggedness and acknowledged expertise of the Magelis XBT operator terminal offer, the Magelis IPC range stands out as innovative in the industry.

Magelis thus constitutes a complete and aesthetically pleasing range suitable for a wide spectrum of applications, from simple alphanumeric or graphic operator terminals to powerful communicating industrial PC stations.

The PCs are available in three versions:

* PC Panel.

* PC Box.

* Combined hardware + software package.

With numerous combinations of rugged, reliable front panels and CPUs, the Magelis IPC range is suitable for all human machine interface requirements.

Innovative features and conformity

* The IP65 front panels, available in 12 or 15-inch versions with tactile feedback and/or keyboard, they have high-quality backlit LCD TFT screens providing high contrast, excellent brightness and a large viewing angle.

* Unaffected by shocks and vibrations, Magelis IPC includes a wide range of rugged CPUs (steel chassis), scalable according to power and extension capacity, from Celeron to Pentium III, up to 512 Mb and 6 PCI/ISA extension slots. They also integrate a Fast Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps).

* A patented technical innovation, Magelis IPC takes pride in mechanical modularity.

* The LCD screen, processor, power supply, floppy disk/CD-Rom drive, hard disk and extension slots are simple sub-assemblies which can be changed in a matter of seconds.

* Conforming to the recognised operating characteristics of Schneider PLCs, Magelis modularity simplifies maintenance operations and helps to increase the productivity of the user's installations while reducing stock requirements.

* A reliable industrial PC even in the most difficult environments, Magelis IPC conforms to standards UL, CUL, CE, Hazardous location class 1 div 2.

These rugged products have been developed using hardened components and materials, which means that they are more than a match for the demands of severe environments, ensuring reliability and durability during continuous operation.

Ease of integration

Although designed for industrial applications, Magelis IPC remains a genuine PC using the latest technology, ensuring openness and interoperability. It can thus be integrated with the user's control system architectures through:

* Intel processors, Microsoft operating systems (2000, NT, etc).

* USB, IrDA, serial and parallel ports, PCI and ISA bus.

* Ethernet/intranet/Web connectivity via integrated Fast Ethernet port.

* Complete alphanumeric keyboard, PC standard, for optimum comfort and user-friendliness.

* Unlimited communication/connectivity: Modbus, Modbus+, Uni-telway, Fipio, Fipway, Ethernet TCP/IP (Transparent Factory).

Combined offers

Magelis IPC provides combined hardware and software offers (Scada Vijeo Look and Concept/PL7 PLC programming software).

For the customer, this ensures a quality industrial system, tested, pre-installed, appropriately sized for its software requirements, and supported internationally by the global Schneider network. The combined offer, Magelis IPC and Atrium PCX PLC co-processor card, comes 'all-in-one'. (PC hardware with PLC in the PC + scada and PL7 PRO PLC programming software).

Particularly suited to installations requiring a high level of interaction between the Premium control system functions and other control, processing, or management applications (Axis control, NC, HMI/scada, etc).

Innovative new control software

Vijeo Look is soon to be introduced as a cost-effective solution for small and medium-size scada applications. This versatile scada software package is designed to enhance Schneider's Transparent Factory portfolio of products. Through effective use of industry standards, Vijeo Look offers compatibility with virtually any type of intelligent device - including the above-mentioned Magelis IPC range.

Integrating the latest software packages such as OPC Server for Schneider PLCs, Microsoft VBA, MSDE database and LapLink GOLD, Vijeo Look is a technology container, able to incorporate different objects such as Active X and Java Beans into a single application.

Vijeo Look provides communication within any automation system via OPC standard interfaces, making it an appropriate choice for system integrators and mixed vendor installations. Further advantages are provided by enhanced visualisation tools, alarm and diagnostic management, with complete historical trending and data logging through ADO interfaces.

Designed with simplicity in mind, the package comes with a demo showing most of the features and how they can easily be implemented. It has a powerful graphic editor similar to existing Schneider scada packages, with the same built-in Java Beans library as Factorycast.

Vijeo Look is available in two different packages:

* A 'Build Time'/'Run Time' product, allowing an application to be created and executed. Available in 128, 512, and 1024 I/O.

* A 'Run Time' product, allowing the execution of an application created with the 'Build Time'/'Run Time' product. Available in 128, 512, and 1024 I/O.

Vijeo Look allows the user to run applications on all PLCs currently in Schneider's catalogue and also supports legacy systems that are accessible via OFS.
