Pulse Control Systems: Aims to become the largest Siemens approved instrumentation partner

February 2015 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Founded in 2011 by Nimelen Pillay, Pulse Control Systems is an independent market specialist, designing and supplying customised automated solutions to a number of industries including water and wastewater, petrochemical and mining.

The company makes extensive use of Siemens technology to provide its client base with innovative and flexible applications, delivered timeously and within budget to the highest international standards.

Based in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal, and with a satellite office in Johannesburg, the four technicians, two sales people and an administrator work closely with clients to provide end to end engineered systems based upon individual requirements. “Underpinning our entire operation is our intention to provide quality, safety and reliability on all our projects. We are committed to maintain these standards and we continue to raise the bar as technology and our clients demand better and safer solutions,” says Pillay.

“Fundamental to our success has been our flexible approach to solutions provision and the wealth of experience which our personnel have gained over many years of rendering quality service to our valued clients. We are able to offer project management support services, installation, maintenance, training, plant upgrades and site modifications,” he adds.

In addition to the extensive range of Siemens instrumentation marketed and installed by Pulse Control Systems, the company is also a distributor for a locally manufactured pressure gauge from SA Gauge and thermocouples from TMS, as well as being the sole agent for Drehmo’s electric actuators and an anti-vandalism pepper spray from Ataraxia.

The company has a solid relationship with Siemens and is not only one of Siemens’ Big Five approved Platinum partners in southern Africa, but was also awarded the ‘Most Improved Partner for 2013/2014’. “It is our aim to become the most successful Siemens instrumentation distributor in the region and with that in mind we will continue to drive in-house competence and capabilities,” says Pillay.

Training forms a critical element in the company’s success. “We believe in investing in our people to ensure that they are up to date on current technology and trends. We provide them with both training ex-suppliers as well as sales training, to enable them to select optimum solutions for our clients. We also provide promising employees and potential candidates with bursaries to further their tertiary education,” he continues.

The company also provides extensive onsite training to client employees to ensure the necessary knowledge transfer required to aid in the smooth running of the plant once Pulse Control Systems hands over the commissioned project. This, Pillay says, is extremely important; since the client’s team will form the first line maintenance after the installation is operational. This results in reduced downtime and a decreased risk of system failure.

The company has worked extensively in South Africa for eThekwini Water Services on the Mahatma Gandi pump station in Durban’s CBD, for the KwaMashu waste-water treatment upgrade, on Umgeni Water’s Hazelmere treatment works upgrade and for Rand Water (Gauteng) on the poly electrolyte dosing plants 1 and 2. A real feather in the cap is the huge project it completed for East Rand Water’s Waterval wastewater treatment plant upgrade. A large project for Assmang’s manganese furnaces 1 and 2 upgrade project in Cato Ridge was also recently completed.

A number of projects in Mozambique, Swaziland and Zimbabwe have been undertaken and when the opportunity arises, the company is enthusiastic about extending its footprint into other SADC countries.
