With collaboration from Instek Control, Centec recently delivered four DeGaS-Cold de-aeration skids to a major brewing facility in southern Africa. These skids were completely custom manufactured according to various client’s requirements and requests.
In the food and beverage industry, dissolved oxygen has an adverse impact on flavour stability and shelf life. The de-aeration system DeGaS-Cold removes oxygen from water that is used for the production of beer and soft drinks. In other industries, dissolved oxygen plays a major part in piping erosion and boiler deterioration.
Principle of operation
Cold de-aeration is performed at ambient temperature. The water is dispersed at the top of the column, which contains densely packed, thin stainless steel sheets arranged in such a way that the water takes multiple paths as it flows down through the column.
This maximises the transfer surface and the contact time between the water and the strip gas (CO2 or N2). The gas is fed into the bottom of the column and flows upwards inside it in a counter current to the water.
The large partial pressure difference of O2 forces the oxygen out of the water into the gas phase. At the top of the column, the removed oxygen leaves the system as a gas, together with the undissolved strip gas.
The O2 content of the de-aerated water is permanently monitored via a high-precision optical Oxytrans sensor made by Centec, a company with decades of experience in the development and manufacturing of precision instruments for O2 control. The virtually oxygen free water is collected at the bottom of the column. For further processing, it can optionally be cooled, disinfected with UV light or additionally carbonated. The skid can optionally be operated under vacuum and completely without strip gas.
Typical technical data
Capacity: 10 hl/h to 2 000 hl/h.
Residual oxygen: 100 ppb. to 10 ppb. (lower on request).
Material: 316 and 304 stainless steel or according to customer requirements.
