Precise detection of corrosive contaminants

July 2015 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The Mettler Toledo Thornton DCC1000 system offers a new design for conductivity measurement for power cycle chemistry monitoring. By providing conductivity measurement in compliance with ASTM D4519, this system provides assurance of water purity to maximise power production and minimise corrosion. Unambiguous measurement of trace levels of corrosion-causing contaminants is enabled with minimum operator supervision.

The system features the multi-parameter M800 transmitter and UniCond sensors with smart sensing technology to accurately and reliably measure conductivity at each stage of sample conditioning. The M800 transmitter with colour touchscreen provides simultaneous monitoring of up to four in-line sensors. UniCond sensors with intelligent sensor management (ISM) technology provide conductivity measurement in pure waters, giving the greatest accuracy at the lowest detection levels.

Conductivity is measured after the cation resin column has been used to eliminate interferences, as well as after degassing the sample, to provide information on various contaminants in the water. The degassing is accomplished by raising the sample water temperature to near boiling which releases the carbon dioxide from the water. The sample water is then cooled and the system measures the actual levels of corrosion-causing contaminants such as chlorides and sulfates remaining.

The DCC1000 system is optimised to perform specific, cation and degassed cation conductivity measurements to monitor the quality in feed water, steam and power condensate applications. Benefits include faster plant start-ups and a better understanding of plant characteristics and maintenance.
